Jack Gantos wins John Newbery Medal for best children's book of 2011
'Dead End in Norvelt' by Jack Gantos was named winner of the John Newberry Award for best children's book of 2011. We first caught up with Gantos at the 2004 BookExpo America trade convention, where he introduced Hole in My Life (Farrar, Straus & Giroux; September, 2004), the gritty account of his failed fast-bucks scheme as a young man that landed him in jail and changed his life, and more recently at the 2011 BookExpo America, where he introduced his Newberry Award-winner Dead End in Norvelt (Farrar,Strauss & Giroux; September, 2011). In addition to the Newberry Medal news announcement, the Associated Press reported that Chris Raschka's A Ball for Daisy (Schwartz & Wade; May, 2011) won the Randolph Caldecott award for best illustrated story. AP noted numerous other book award winners, including the Coretta Scott King Book Award for best illustrated book which went to Shane W. Evans' Underground: Finding the Light to Freedom (Roaring Brook Press; January, 2011), among others.
