Charles R. Smith performs, reads, and promises more to come
Winner of a Coretta Scott King Author Honor and a Sugarman Award, Charles R. Smith appeared at the 2008 National Book Festival, where he began with an introduction to his book of poetry, Twelve Rounds To Glory: The Story Of Muhammad Ali (Candlewick Press; November, 2007) by performing two verse chapters from the book--Round Two, Igniting The Flame, where a young Muhammad Ali decides to learn to box to defend himself, and Round Four, Mighty Mouth, in which Muhammad Ali defeats Sonny Liston for the heavyweight championship of the world. Smith then switched from poetry to prose and read a passage from the beginning of his recently released first novel Chameleon (Candlewick Press; September, 2008) and a climactic passage near the end of his bittersweet novel about an L.A. teen facing the challenges of growing up in a tough, gang-dominated inner-city neighborhood.
